JOB DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a Hardware Engineer to support our client’s hardware engineering organization, helping characterize and validate a broad range of networking systems. This is a hands-on role that combines system-level lab testing, measurement automation, data analysis, and cross-functional problem solving across power, optical, and thermal performance.
You will work in a laboratory environment performing system-level characterization and validation on a wide variety of Ciena systems. You will plan and execute tests, operate and automate laboratory equipment, analyze results, document findings, and work with engineering teams to resolve issues.
- Plan and execute system-level hardware tests covering power, optical, and thermal performance.
- Configure Ciena systems, test fixtures, environmental chambers, power supplies, optical instrumentation, and supporting laboratory equipment.
- Use Ethernet- and GPIB-based interfaces to control test equipment, collect measurement data, and improve test repeatability.
- Develop and maintain test methods, procedures, automation, and data-analysis tools for hardware characterization.
- Analyze test results against product requirements, identify unexpected behaviour, and support root-cause investigation with hardware, software, and system teams.
- Prepare clear test plans, laboratory records, technical reports, and concise summaries of results and risks.
- Work independently on assigned investigations while collaborating effectively with a broader cross-functional engineering team.
Contribute to a safe, organized, and efficient laboratory environment.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- At least five years of relevant experience in hardware engineering, system test, product verification, characterization, or a comparable laboratory-based role.
- Hands-on experience performing system-level testing in a hardware laboratory environment.
- Practical experience with power, optical, and thermal testing techniques and associated measurement equipment.
- Ability to interpret hardware requirements, develop effective test approaches, analyze complex data, and communicate technical conclusions.
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, interpersonal, and communication skills.
NICE TO HAVE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience with Ciena products, including 6500-S, 6500-T, WaveServer, WaveRouter, or RLS.
- Software development or test-automation experience using Java, C#, Python, Microsoft .NET, or Microsoft Visual Studio.
- Understanding of object-oriented software development concepts.
- Experience using and interfacing with test equipment through Ethernet and GPIB.
- Experience creating reusable software or automation frameworks for laboratory test and data collection.
- Experience with telecommunications hardware, optical networking systems, or high-speed data communications.
- Self-starter who is highly motivated, adaptable, and comfortable progressing work with limited supervision.
